What is an Elevation Certificate? And How to Obtain One with First Choice Surveying

What is an elevation certificate? This is a document that provides information on a building’s elevation in reference to the mean high tide base flood elevation. An elevation certificate is used to obtain flood insurance on a building. It includes the building type, location, lowest point of elevation, flood zone, and other important information used to determine the proper flood insurance premium rate.

Not every property requires an elevation certificate. They are typically required if your property is in a high-risk flood zone according to FEMA maps.

When is an Elevation Certificate Needed?

An elevation certificate is needed before you purchase flood insurance. If you make updates to your property such as building a garage, pool, or a new addition to your home, a new elevation certificate may be needed.

If you are buying a new home, you will want to obtain an elevation certificate in your name so that you will have it for flood insurance or if you are building any additions on your property.

You’ll likely want to give your elevation certificate to your home insurance agent to get a flood insurance quote if you’re in a high-risk flood area.

As a reminder, not every property requires an elevation certificate. You can search for your property on FEMA’s flood maps to determine whether you are in a high-risk flood zone to see if you may require a certificate. You can determine whether you are in a high-risk flood zone at the following FEMA weblink.
